E.O.P/A.I.M - STONY BROOK
EOP is an Educational Opportunity Program that is designed for low income families who did not have the fortunes to allow proper schooling for their children, and so, the student was forced to struggle with school, or hold a part time/ full time job during their high school years. Due to circumstances like this, faculty accept the fact that students may have slightly lower grades than expected. Students will be acknowledged and considered as long as they show potential to succeed in a rigorous school as Stony Brook University.
The purpose of EOP is to take them from low income classes, educate them, and allow them to prosper with the degrees they’ve earn. Students are expected to excel, but furthermore, leave the low class income and proceed a new generation of children who will not need the help of EOP or other government aid.
An EOP student benefits tremendously from this program for many reasons. One significant reason is because the student will have specific counselors/advisors that work hard and guide the student throughout their undergraduate years. They help you with your choice in majors/minors, seek scholarships/ study abroad experiences/ internships ie. Student will have their own private office, along with other EOP students. This ultimately helps during midterms and finals because other Sinc Sites (computer labs) will be filled with other students trying to find a seat to print their stuff while you can go to an exclusive office and not wait on line at all.
Students receive free tutoring, and a strategy to boost up the GPA in the event that they are academically struggling. Last year, 6000 students applied for EOP in Stony Brook and only 126 were accepted.
EOP is more than a program, it’s a family.
